Folk calendar events

Autumn brings us cold weather and darkness which means it is time to spend more time in the house and do inside chores. But there are some fun holydays in Estonian folk calendar even during this dark time.

At Open Air Museum you can have a party following the theme of Michaelmas, Martinmas Eve or Saint Catherine’s Day. Old games, Martinmas and Saint Catherine’s Day masks, singing and dancing make everybody happy, no matter how old you are. These events are a fun way to learn something about Estonian carnival traditions.

  • Michaelmas

Estonians used to say, that on September 29, Michaelmas you have to have your turnip in the cellar and your woman in the house, which means that work in the field has to be done.  Young boys and girls had their last bonfire nights and grilled potatoes and turnips in the ashes. At home, girls had common work evenings; they learned new songs and handicraft skills from each other, solved riddles and played games.

At the museum’s swing grounds we will have a Michaelmas bonfire and grill potatoes in the ashes. Party host will teach you old parlour games and you can play fun games just like youngsters 100 years ago used to. Folk band is playing cheerful tunes.

  • Martinmas

Martinmas, November 10 marks the end of the period of All Souls, when the souls of ancestors were worshiped. On this day children disguise themselves as men and go from door to door, singing songs and telling jokes to receive sweets.

At the stable room of Kolu inn we will celebrate Martinmas with a jolly party. Folk band is playing nice tunes and everyone is welcome to the dance floor. We will make Martinmas masks - it is important to disguise yourself so well that no one recognizes you.

  • Saint Catherine’s Day

In the evening of Saint Catherines Day beautiful kadri beggars were running around in the village. They were dressed in white and had beet-red cheeks. All boys and girls were dressed as women. Kadri beggars ran from door to door, sang and wished the families herd luck.

At the Kolu inn we will celebrate Saint Catherine’s Day with live music, dancing and singing. Also we will make masks, just like old kadri beggars used to wear.
