The holydays in the winter are fun to celebrate both indoors and outside in the snow. At our museum you can have a party following the theme of Saint Thomas’ Day, Candlemas Day or Shrovetide. This kind of party is an entertaining way to learn something new about Estonian winter traditions.
Saint Thomas’ Day, December 21 marks the beginning of major preparations for the approaching Christmas season. To ward off laziness, a figure of ‘Dirty Thomas’ was made of old clothes and straw, and taken to someone else’s farm. But you needed to be careful not to let a similar ‘Dirty Thomas’ near your own door.
At the stable room of Kolu inn we will celebrate Saint Thomas’ Day with live music, dancing and parlour games. Also, you can make your own ‘Dirty Thomas’.

Candlemas Day is women’s holyday. It is men’s duty to do all women’s household chores, and women may leisurely use the time to go to a friend’s place or a café and have a drink. Sweet red drink will make sure your cheeks stay nicely pink for the whole year ahead. It is a good day to make and burn candles.
At the stable room of Kolu inn we will celebrate Candlemas Day with live music and dancing. Also, we will make candles and eat grits.

Shrovetide is the time to go sledging, which foretells good flax growth. Eating pea soup and pig trotters guarantees strong health and you can use the bones to make great spinners.
At the museum you can celebrate Shrovetide at the warm stable room of Kolu inn or outside in the snow. Horse-drawn sleigh ride on the snowy roads of the museum and playing fun games will get you in a jolly mood. Also, we will make a spinner from pig bone, just like children many years ago used to do.
This is the only day when women can propose men, so use your opportunity!
